As I am writing this blog the world is currently in the middle of the Covid-19 infectious disease pandemic and we are all self-isolating and told to “stay at home” to contain the hyper contagious infection of this virus. What role does music play in the dealing, healing and recovery of this crisis? Ultimately, we will need science and healthcare to kill this global pandemic but music can play a major role in curing the world from this disease.
1. Music and songs can keep people going through the toughest of times – melody and lyrics can create feelings through connection and emotion. Sometimes those generated feelings are of sorrow, healing, empowerment or optimism and they are all excellent ways of coping through the power of music.
2. Practice and the art of mastery – as they say it takes 10,000 hours to master a craft and when we are all mandated to stay isolated and at home what better time to “wood shed” and get better at the art of music and our instrument(s) of choice.
3. Adversity and challenge feeds the creative soul – as the world faces these economic and health challenges music can be a creative tool or emotional distraction for the mind and help alleviate stress. Plain and simple – if you are so focused on creating or playing music your mind has no extra processing power to stress about anything else.
4. Virtual open mic’s, dance parties, co-writing sessions and in-home concerts – never before has music and amazing technology like Zoom, Facetime or Skype been used to create, entertain, have fun or connect. I think due to this time in history our definitions for music venues and creative tools will be forever changed.
5. Music Brings people together virtually and in spirit – At the heart of it all music can bring people together during times like this to raise funds for certain charities, create heightened awareness or just bring a local community together with a music event. A unique example of this is when Italy was deep in their crisis and no one could leave their homes every night people would go out on their verandas and sing together.
Stay in tune, stay in touch and stay healthy.
