The science and story of the Chinese Bamboo Tree is a lot like the journey required for the craft of songwriting. Songwriting requires faith, patience, perseverance, commitment, growth and development - the same traits are required to grow a Chinese Bamboo tree.

When a farmer first plants a giant bamboo tree from a seed he waters and fertilizes it for a whole year….and nothing happens. On the second year he again waters and fertilizes the tree and yet again…..nothing happens. He keeps watering and fertilizing through the third and fourth years and yet again….NOTHING happens. Finally on the fifth year the seed breaks through the soil and can grow up to 90 feet in 6 weeks!! That’s 2.1 feet everyday – a person can literally watch the tree grow.

The real question is did the bamboo tree grow 90 feet in 5 weeks, or did it grow 90 feet in 5 years??

The answer is 90 feet in 5 years. While the farmer was watering and nurturing the seed for the first few years the seed was growing the required roots to sustain and maintain the forthcoming growth it will see in the later years of it’s life.

The growth rate of the bamboo tree is a lot like songwriting. Most times it’s really tough to see our immediate results in songwriting, but in reality we are slowly developing and laying down roots as we learn our craft and write bad, to better, to great songs. Many times it feels like we are standing still and getting no results even though we are continuously writing, networking, rhyming, reading and practicing our instrument.

Watering a bamboo tree can be a lonely hard struggle just like songwriting. This struggle in essence is the precious learning and experience we are getting and it is the grit and grind in the songwriting journey that makes the payoff so worth it.

What are you doing today that you possibly wont see any results for 3, 5 or even 10 years?

Life won’t always be linear and results will rarely align with your effort but that’s okay. Stay positive, be patient, persevere, grow your roots, develop your skills and KEEP ON WATERING YOUR DREAM!
